About Upwey in Victoria

Upwey is located about 32 kilometers east of Melbourne’s central business district and has a population of about 7,000 people. It is located near the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, a set of low mountain ranges famous for its bird feeding and walking tracks.

Upwey is named after an English village. In the 1850s, the place was called “Mast Gully” because several masts for ships were cut down. It was renamed “Upwey” in the late 1890s by the Tullidge sisters.

Despite its small population, Upwey’s community is thriving. It has a wide variety of shops and services on its Main Street. It has a railway station serviced by the Belgrave Railway line, a bus service, two primary schools and one secondary school. Joining forces with its neighbouring township Tecoma, Upwey formed an Australian Rules football team (Upwey-Tecoma).
