About Ballarat

It is a one and a half hour drive west from Melbourne with an approximate distance of 110 kilometers. It is surrounded by vast, sweeping bushland as well as delicate wetlands, with many large reserves and state parks close by.

Interestingly, it is where the kayaking and rowing events of the 1956 Olympics were held. The name Ballarat is believed to come from two Aboriginal words put together: “balla” meaning ‘elbow’ plus “arat” meaning ‘place’.

Its inner suburbs include Ballarat East, Newington, Sebastopol, Redan, Bakery Hill, Mount Pleasant, Golden Point, Black Hill, Brown Hill, Soldiers Hill, Eureka, Canadian. Other suburbs include Lucas, Alfredton, Magpie, Delacombe, Warrenhelp, Lake Gardens, Lake Wendoura, Wendouree, Cardigan, Miners Rest, Nerina and Bakery Hill. Main streets include Mair Street, Sturt Street, Lydlard, Armstrong, Doveton, Drummond, Steinford, Peel, Dana, Talbot, Hill, Pleasant and Humphray Streets, amongst others. Transport links include the Midland Highway, Western Freeway, Sunraysia Highway and Glenelg Highway. There is also a local airport and a railway line linking it to Melbourne and Ararat.
